Geocache Description:

In August 2012 the UK Mega Event is coming to Cartmel in Cumbria. This event at Hincaster is one of a varied series of events supporting this Mega Event. It is hosted by Phil (of PhilPamandRob) supported by other members of the North West Mega Event Team and the local Hincaster Trailway Volunteer Group.

2012 UK Mega Event

This event is based at Hincaster and is suitable for geocachers of all ages. Although attendees are welcome to simply relax and chat, the location has been chosen for the Hincaster Trail. This is a 2.5 mile scenic amble through the Parish of Hincaster, and is split into two convenient loops. Further details can be found by clicking on the ‘related website’ link above.

When & Where :
Sunday 12th August 2012 between 1pm and 4:30pm

Car Parking will be signposted from the road leading east from the village green (with erratic boulder on it – see waypoints) towards the point where the road passes under the railway. Refreshments will be available and will be signposted on this same stretch of road. This will be the base for the event where the logbook can be signed and details regarding the Hincaster Trailway will be available. If using a Satnav, please use postcode LA7 7ND.

Details :
This event at Hincaster is being held in conjunction with the Hincaster Trail Volunteer Group. Although all geocachers are welcome to just relax and chat, the 2.5 mile walk around the Parish on the trailway is highly recommended. It comprises a relatively flat southern loop of about a mile and a slightly rougher and steeper northern loop of about 1.5 miles.

The Trails Southern loop, described as ‘a mile without a stile’ follows the route of the old railway line south through delightful mature woodland. It runs parallel to the current west coast mail line, so there is no need to worry if you hear a train approaching! The woodland stroll is initially on a man made shale path, and after about 300-400m becomes rougher compacted earth. Off-road bicycles and prams with large soft wheels should be alright, but scooters, buggies etc with small wheels may encounter some difficulties with the terrain. Once at the southern tip of the walk, quiet country lanes can be followed back to the start. These are narrow in places, so everyone can decide for themselves whether to use these lanes, or return the way they came back through the woods to the start location.

The Northern loop is on rougher terrain with an ascent and descent. It can be tackled on a mountain bike, but is not suitable for prams etc. The highlight of this loop is the Hincaster Tunnel, which at 378 yards is the longest tunnel on the Lancaster canal. Short detours from the route over the horse path are recommended to visit both ends of the tunnel. The short stretch west of the road heading north from Hincaster is only suitable for walkers as it crosses fields and has stiles. Cyclists could go down the lane to see Hincaster Hall, but would then need to return to that road and follow it back south to the village green and start point.

The Hincaster Trailway

Refreshments will be available, courtesy of the Hincaster Trailway Volunteer Group, and this will be the location of the event. There will be the opportunity for geo-chat, and to find out more about the Parish of Hincaster, and the Trailway in particular. There will also be activities for youngsters to undertake if they go on the walk.

Please note that there are no public toilets here, nor anywhere else in the village of Hincaster.
