Shall We Play A Game? (Auckland) Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

funkymunkyzone: Just for clarity, the change that Groundspeak has made (which they have said they will not roll back) is to do with how the images on the cache page are displayed in your browser. Groundspeak has employed a proxy to fetch the images and then send them to your browser but unfortunately a number of puzzles such as this one have been broken by this.

They did it to prevent images hosted external to geocaching, com from sending cookies to your computer. That's probably a good thing and they did it for compliance with new data privacy laws and regulations that are spinning wildly out of control all over the world. Unfortunately even though none of my puzzles used cookies, or any other personally identifiable data that would be covered by such laws, they are simply collateral damage.

What puzzles I can save by reworking them and having the user go to an external page where the puzzle is hosted, I will do so over the course of time, so long as reviewers allow some time for fixing this Groundspeak-created problem. Some of them will simply have to go though - this is unfortunately one of them.

How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

This cache is not located at the published coordinates - to find it, you will need to play a little game. BYO pen to the final.

This will be a very different type of puzzle indeed.

This time you will be competing against other potential finders in order to get the coordinates of the final cache for this puzzle.

Here's How It Works:

The coordinates that get displayed on the game screen, below, change with time. Basically, every 30 minutes the next missing digit in sequence is eligible to be displayed. You will need to refresh this page, or go away and come back to this page, in order to see it (this is also considered as playing your turn).

HOWEVER, when someone visits the cache page, and views the coordinates, they will lock in the display of coordinates they see. This lock-in lasts for between 60 and 120 minutes, after which the lock-in will expire and the next visitor will lock the display in again on the coordinates they see, once again for 60 to 120 minutes. If you visit the page and view the coordinates during the lock-in period, you will only see the coordinates, and missing digit, as they were locked in.

If there is a digit you want to see, but someone has locked the display already on a previous digit, you may miss out on seeing the digit you want until it comes around again in 5 hours time.

It will take a little bit of time and maybe some strategy in order to obtain the full coordinates of the final cache, especially if there are a number of other people playing against you at the same time! Maybe their moves will help you, but most likely they will hinder you!

Bonuses & Scoring:

As you play the game, there is a little bonus designed to help you. Every five times you manage to be the one who locks the display, you will earn a special "Unlock", and you can collect a maximum of 5 of these. At any time you visit the page and the coordinates have been locked in, but you want to unlock them, you can click on the UNLOCK link under the game screen. This will unlock the coordinates display and give you the opportunity to see a new missing coordinate digit and lock the display again yourself.

There is also a scoring element to the game, as follows:
- Every time you are able to lock the screen you get 50 points plus 5 points per minute since it was last locked, up to a maximum of 50000 points.
- Each "Unlock" you earn gains you a bonus of 10000 points.
- Each "Unlock" you use gains you a bonus of 25000 points.
- Between visits, or turns, your score decreases at a rate of 1 point every 2 minutes.
- If you visit and the coordinates display is already locked by someone else, you lose 100 points.
- If you visit and the coordinates display is already locked by you, you lose 200 points.
What's your hi-score? Why not tell us in your log!
NOTE: You do not need to score any points in order to solve the puzzle and find the final cache.

IMPORTANT: You may experience browser caching issues when playing this game, where it appears that a screen (such as the unlock screen, for example) shows incorrect old information. It is recommended you switch your browser caching (in Internet Explorer this is Tools/Internet Options/General/Browsing History/Settings) to check for newer versions "everytime I visit the webpage". This will ensure the game screens display correctly and maximise your fun! Also, the main game screen only changes upon refreshing or revisiting this cache page from scratch - it doesn't change while it's sitting here on your screen.

There is quite a lot going on behind the scenes to support this puzzle cache. Should there be any technical issues with the game (such as an error code being displayed, or worse, nothing) please email us and we'll sort it out as quickly as possible.

If you have any "unlocks", you can use one by clicking here: UNLOCK

We hope you enjoy this little (or perhaps not so little) game, and that you get the final coordinates before getting utterly frustrated and giving up!

Please note that this is an individual game, not a team game. You must play the game and solve the puzzle yourself in order to find the final cache. Please do not share digits or coordinates - this is not in the spirit of it.

When you find the cache, please be very gentle retrieving it! Easy does it. :)

Good Luck and Happy Gaming!!!
