Benedikt XVI. dne 27. 9. 2009 jako první papež v historii od jejího založení v roce 1777 navštívil brněnskou diecézi. V Brně – Tuřanech slavil bohoslužbu za účasti 120 tisíc poutníků, z toho téměř jedenáct tisíc jich přijelo ze zahraničí.
Ve 12.45 hodin potom Svatý otec odletěl zpět do Prahy, kde má připraveno setkání se zástupci ekumeny a s akademickou obcí.
Pódium, na němž papež slavil bohoslužbu, zdobila socha Panny Marie Tuřanské z nedalekého mariánského poutního místa, jedna z nejstarších dřevěných plastik nalezených na našem území.
Na hudebním doprovodu bohoslužby se podílel 120 členný Katedrální smíšený sbor Brno, žesťový orchestr, Svatomichalská gregoriánská schola a řada sólistů. Zdravotnickou službu zajišťovalo více než 370 osob, o organizaci v sektorech pečovalo tisíc dobrovolných pořadatelů, mezi nimi i členové Armády České republiky.

Stage, where the pope celebrated worship, adorned statue of the Virgin Mary from the nearby Tuřany Marian pilgrimage, one of the oldest wood sculptures found in the country.
The musical accompaniment of worship participated in 120-member Brno Cathedral choir, brass band, St. Michael's Gregorian Choir and several soloists. Health service secured more than 370 people, the organization in sectors cared thousand volunteer organizers, among them members of the Army of the Czech Republic.
