Geocache Description:

Cache is dedicated to Rakoczi Castle in Sarospatak. It is hidden outside the castle in its walls.

The Castle

A large five floor tower of the castle was build between 1534 - 1541 by Peter Perenyi. The castle complex was completed in late Renaissance style to the plans of italian architect. Its medieval keep (the Red Tower) has a square ground plan and four corner tower, as well as remains of italian defensive bastion, and a 16th to 17th century wing with a fine facade. The castle church was built in gothic style in 14th to 15th century and contains the wall paintings by Maulbertsch, a famous baroque organ, the hungary's largest wooden altar and the statue of st. Erzsebet.
In 1616 Zsuzsanna Lorantffy the owner of the castle married Gyorgy Rakoczi I, the later Prince of Transylvania. This is how the castle of Sarospatak become a centre of the Rakoczi family. The defences of the castle were strengthened and the Lorantffy wing added in 1640, then the logia and the platform for cannons.
From 1676 the castle was held by Ferenc Rakoczi. Its defences were ordered to be demolished down by the Emperor in 1702. They was restored in the Baroque style by the Trautson princes (1711 - 1776) and in the Romantic style (from 1807) by the Bretzenheim princes, while preserving its Renaissance elements. From 1875 the castle was owned by the princes Windischgratz. Since 1950 the Rakoczi Museum of the Hungarian National Museum has held the Rakoczi inheritance. Today the castle houses the Rakoczi museum with its exhibitions featuring the history of the castle, the Rakoczi family and arts and crafts exhibition. The Rakoczi castle is one of the most valuable fortified castles in Hungary.
