Geocache Description:

A cache near Elounda

At the south side of Elounda there is the hill of Oxa. There at the top there was the ancient town of Naxos. It was an old Minoan town which we don’t know if it was a kingdom or it was the acropolis of nearby Olous. We really don’t know how and when this town was destroyed. There is a myth that the two towns, Olous and Naxos were partners. But the king of Olous was jealous of the site of Naxos so with a trick they managed to conquer the site. At the Greek island of Naxos we have found coins with the ancient god Dionysos on them, the same also in ancient Naxos. There you can see the nine wells and some part of the walls of the town. The view from there is breathtaking. You have the entire Merabello gulf in front of you. It is from these moments you feel like an eagle. There are multiple ways to get there; the best we think is to arrive from Ellinika village to the “Above Spinaloga” cache and from there to hike until the top of the hill.
