2012 Techno Event 2 : Bring a newbie Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

BruceTP: The time has come to put this to bed suffice to say the next techno event on 30 June 2012 should also prove to be interesting as The Thomas Family reveal all in how to put together a Wherigo cache. The are fun to play but quite tricky to put together. I am looking forward to learning how to do it. Also Damhuisclan will be on hand to talk about badges on Gsak. So, the next techno is not to be missed.
See you all then and thanks for attending this one. The logs were most encouraging.

Until next time, safe caching.
Bruce

Geocache Description:

A time for newbies to learn more about Geocaching.

Geocaching 101 aka bring a newbie along!
This will be the ninth in the series Techno Events and the second for 2012. In anticipation of the MEGA (don't forget 4 - 7 October) and the drive to attract more new cachers to the game we thought it expedient do have another techno event where we go back to basics.

As cache owners it is evident that some of the new cachers have not be familiarised with the basics of the game, like when you replace a cache it must be in the exact spot from whence it came. I have had, on occasion, to look for my own cache because it is not where I had planted it. Or, have you experienced it that after a newbie has found your cache it then goes missing because that have left it very conspicuous?

Alternatively, how many trackable TBs and coins have gone astray because the newbies have not been told how to log and track them?

There is only one solution… Education and ongoing education. Hence the importance of this event. It is a chance for you to invite a newbie to come along with you and learn more about geocaching and how to play the game. Many of them would not normally go to an event because they either don't know about them or would be too shy to come on their own.

I would therefore like to encourage the regulars to keep a look out for newbies logging finds on you caches and drop them a note to welcome them and then to personally invite them to this event. There is nothing to beat the personal touch.

If you would like to join us for the technical session, please feel free to bring your laptop and GPS or other device along so that you can get hands on experience with the geocaching website as well as trying out some other tools and tricks of the trade. Post your "will attend" log early as seating is on a "first come first served" basis for the technical part. Please indicate whether you will be coming to the "byte", "bite" or both. It will assist me in the catering and seating arrangements. However, should you want to come just to meet up with everybody and renew caching friendships, discover some new coins or just enjoy a sundowner, braai fires will be available from 17:30 onwards. Please bring along your own "dop & chop".

The full program for the afternoon may be subject to change but here goes...

13:00 - 14:00 Welcome, settle in and get ready. We shall kick off with the practical session: This will be a hands on time as well as a Q&A dealing with any specific issues which you may have with planting caches and suitability of containers. Rolf from GEO936 has asked each of you to bring a container which you may think suitable but which may or may not be depending on the location where it is placed. Also, if you are new and just struggling with your newly acquired GPS unit, iPad or iPhone, now is the time to ask the questions: like - How do I access all the geocaches on my preferred device? There will always be someone with an answer for you. There will also be a sweeping overview of what other software and tools are available for the various devices. Rolf will bring some practical examples of cache containers, large and small, camo and non camp, to show what works and what does not. You will have hands on fun camo painting cache containers which will be provided.

14:00 - 14:15 Refreshments will be served, including home made soup.

14:15 - 15:00 The first lecture session will be taken by our senior Africa reviewer Rodney, aka ROTSIP. He will give a brief history on Geocaching, the role of the reviewer and some of the general rule and guidelines in creating a cache listing. It is important to know these as it makes his life easier when reviewing caches for publication. He will also remind the oldies of some of the changes in the rules which have occurred since they started caching.

15:00 - 15:15 More refreshments, smoke break and munchies.

15:15 - 16:00 The second lecture session will be presented by Pine from RedGlobe. He will go into the specifics and etiquette of caching - The do's and don'ts when you are actually out in the field. His talk will include what to expect at the various types of cache. For example it is not advisable to arrive at a CITO in high heels and parasol. It is not a highbrow event but a sweat of the brow event - working to clean up an area. Pine will also deal with the important issue of trackables and what to do with them, including logging them and moving them on timeously. They are definitely not keepsakes or souvenirs!

16:00 - 16:30 Silvia from GEO936 will give a brief status report on the progress of the MEGA event later in the year. There are exciting things happening.

16:30 till whenever... Braai, socialising, swapping coins, discovering new coins while having a great time enjoying yourselves to the full. There may be a limited amount of geocaching hardware available but with the high current R/$ exchange rate it has not been viable to bring in much stock. Please bring along whatever you want to eat and drink and enjoy meeting everybody else. Braai fires will be provided.
