Rushbrooke is a small Suffolk parish in the hundred of Thedwastre and the church of St. Nicholas sits atop a small hill. It is a grade 1 listed building built in 1540 mainly of red brick and rendered flint. What is unusual and makes this church worth visiting is the interior where the pews are arranged in a collegiate style facing each other across the nave. This mid 1800’s arrangement with its elaborate carving and decorated organ loft is the work of Colonel Robert Rushbrooke who was once the owner of the moated medieval Tudor Rushbrooke Hall which stood in the estate across the road from the church and was untimely demolished in 1961. In the chancel there are several monuments to the 'Jermyns' the previous owners of Rushbroooke Hall, including one poignant monument showing the reclining figure of Thomas Jermyn who was unfortunately killed at the tender age of 15 by a falling mast on a ship in the Thames.
If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
