As their name indicates, they are not always accessible. When the lake is full, they are fully under water. So like the island, this cache will only be accessible sometimes. I added the seasonal attribute to the cache. But this is NOT a scuba cache. Just a regular cache accessible when the lake level is below 650ft.
The container is supposed to stay waterproof up to 100 ft of water. Thankfully, at max there should not be more than 40 ft of water above the cache.
So enjoy exploring the "Sometimes Island". I will try to update the status of the cache regularly (underwater or accessible). A boat will be required most of the time when the cache is accessible. However, in severe droughts when the lake level is below 628ft, one can actually walk to the Islands from Mansfield Dam Recreation Park. The entrance to the park is $10 per car.
For the latest information on the lake level, please check here.
Historical background
Thanks to BANDA, here are a few links about the construction of the dam and the clean-up during the drought of 2011-2012 .
Here is an aerial view of Lake Travis at the time the cache was hidden.
Instructions to re-hide container
- Make sure the box is hermetically closed. You should hear a snap. You really have to press hard to close it all the way.
- Make sure the box is still attached to the chain, so it does not float away.
- Please put back the larger stone in front of the hole where the box is to protect it from waves when the lake will be at the level.
Have fun!
