The sculpture is based on a local legend about a massive wild boar which was eventually killed and buried beneath a large mound of earth and stones which can still be seen nearby. This area is called Muckduff, muc is irish for pig & duff or dubh means black.
The story goes that the monstrous and magical black boar fled Donegal after having run amok, killing and devouring people. It entered the sea and came ashore again at Enniscrone where it again went on a rampage killing anyone it touched with its poisonous bristles. The local people finally managed to kill it with their spears, the rest is history.
