Confederate Generals Challenge Mystery Cache

We noticed in looking at our cache profile that there are a lot of caches that contain the names of Civil War generals, both North and South, in their titles. Searching the geocaching.com database we found a whole lot more that we have yet to find. It sounded like a challenge.

During the course of the Civil War Confederate troops were led by approximately 425 generals; the Union had nearly 600. Some were killed in battle, some went on to become statesmen and politicians, others returned to the quiet lives they led before their “better angels” called them into war. Some have monuments erected to them with names that roll off the tongues of history teachers everywhere; but most passed away without public notice—their names lost to military textbooks.

This challenge is about the Confederate generals. (There is a similar challenge for the Union generals.)

The cache is at the posted coordinates, but in order to log your visit you must first complete a challenge.

1. Find and log at least 50 caches with titles containing the last name of a Confederate general.  For example, Baker Road 02 contains the last name of General Alpheus Baker.
2. A cache can be used only for one general, even if there is more than one with that last name. If you want to use both Generals Alpheus Baker and Laurence Simmons Baker you must find two caches with the name Baker, e.g., Baker Road 02 and Baker Road 04.
3. If a cache title contains two generals’ names in it, it can only be used for one or the other, e.g., a cache titled “Little Brown Jug” has the names Little and Brown in it but can only be listed for one or the other general.
4. For sake of ease, plurals and possessive forms of the name will be accepted, e.g., Weeds and Trees  and St. John's Cache are acceptable for generals with the last names Weed and St. John respectively.
5. The name, however, cannot be part of another name, e.g., Paynesville Welcomes You! is not allowed for General William Henry Payne.
6. All types of caches and statuses:  active, disabled and archived, can be used to compile your list.
7. How you identify the qualifying caches will probably be your biggest challenge. When you have completed your list email it to us rather than posting or bookmarking it. Remember: this challenge is for Confederate generals only! If you have questions contact us at: brooklyn51@aol.com.
8. And one last thing. If you are completing both the Union and the Confederate Generals Challenges you may note that some of the last names are the same in each list. In fact, many of these generals were related, but because of ideology chose separate sides to fight with. These two challenges are also separate and one cache with the last name of both can be used to satisfy each challenge, e.g., Baker Road 01 can be used for Confederate General Alpheus Baker and Union General Edward Dickinson Baker.

You’ll be surprised how many generals’ names you find. We, ourselves, would qualify for the challenge and we weren’t even trying!
