Os antigos astrónomos chineses chamavam os cinco planetas principais pelos nomes dos elementos; eles estavam associados com: Vénus ao Metal (ouro); Júpiter à Madeira; Mercúrio à Água; Marte ao Fogo; Saturno à Terra. De acordo com a Astrologia chinesa, diz-se que a posição destes planetas, junto com as posições do Sol, Lua, eventuais cometas no céu, bem como o momento do nascimento (horário) e o signo zodiacal podem determinar os traços da personalidade e o destino de uma pessoa.
Segundo a lenda chinesa, antes de partir da Terra, Buda fez uma festa de despedida com todos os animais, mas apenas doze apareceram. E a ordem de chegada deles foi a seguinte: rato, búfalo, tigre, coelho, dragão, serpente, cavalo, cabra, macaco, galo, cão e porco.
Como forma de agradecimento pela presença destes animais, Buda resolveu dedicar um ano a cada um deles, e todas as pessoas nascidas naquele ano, teriam os seus principais defeitos e qualidades como características. Iniciou-se assim um ciclo.
Os signos chineses também apresentam características do yin (negativo) e yang (positivo):
Yang (Tigre, Dragão, Serpente, Cavalo, Cabra e Galo): geralmente são mais ativos, espontâneos, inovadores e realizadores.
Yin (Rato, Boi, Coelho, Macaco, Cão e Porco): são mais passivos, reflexivos e intuitivos.

To the Chinese astrology, it's said that the position of the Sun, Moon, some comets in the sky, as well as the moment of our birth and the sign of the zodiac can determinate the personality and destiny of a person.
According to the Chinese legend, before leave the Earth, Buda as made a goodbye party to all the animals, but only twelve appear. And the order they come as this one: rat, buffalo, tiger, cat, dragon, serpent, horse, goat, monkey, chicken, dog and pig.
As form of appreciation for the presence of which animal, Buda decide to dedicate a year for each one of them, and all the people born in that year, will take their defects and quality as characteristics. Begun in this way a cycle.
The Chinese signs also give some characteristics from the yin (negative) and yang (positive):
Yang (Tiger, Dragon, Serpent, Horse, Goat and Chicken): generally more active, spontaneous, innovators and makers.
Yin (Rat, Buffalo, Rabbit, Monkey, Dog and Pig): they are more passive, reflexives and intuitive.
