It is a small homely pub with a couple of good-size rooms off the main bar. Parking is available at the pub. Dogs are not welcome. Sorry.
You may know the Davenport Arms as "The Thieves Neck".
The Robinson Brewery family acquired the Davenport Arms in 1922 but this historic hostelry – once part of the famed Capesthorne Estate – dates back to the 18th century in which the Davenport family were the game wardens to the King’s hunting preserves.
As hereditary foresters of the King, the Davenports had the authorized power to put poachers to death without trial. Hence, the crest of the Davenport coat of arms originally was a serf’s head with a rope around its neck, signifying that the Davenports had the power to hang without appeal to the King. This same crest can still be seen today from the pub’s pictorial.
The legend has it that the tree which stands outside the Davenport Arms was used to hang wrongdoers, hence the nickname 'The Thieves Neck' – let us hope that any lager louts stay on their best behaviour.
The idea of the KT events is to create an informal get-together with cachers of all ages and experience getting together to discuss caching over a beer. Each event has a couple of caches put out specially for the event to help walk off the food and beer.
The event will follow the tried and tested formula of :
6 pm - Drive by caching in the local area on the way to the event
7 pm - Meet at pub for beer, chat and food
9 pm - Caching in the surrounding area
10-Closing Time - More Beer and chat
The event will have an Avro aircraft theme as the pub is less than 500m from the end of the BAE Woodford airfield.
Food is not normally available in the evening but the landlady has kindly offered to supply the following options to those who would like to eat :
Ham, Egg & Chips
Fish & Chips
Steak & Kidney (not pie)
The landlady has confirmed she can do Welsh Rarebit, Smoked Salmon and Vegetarian Pizza for those who fancy it.
Please let richt2000 know if you want to eat and your choice so I can let the landlady know numbers prior to the event.
I'm hoping to put out at least 3 traditional caches and perhaps one puzzle cache that will be easy to solve and fits in well with the theme.
For those travelling by public transport, The pub is at the end of the X57 and 157 bus routes which go through Bramhall, Cheadle into Manchester via Didsbury. The nearest railway station is Handforth or Wilmslow but its a taxi ride to the pub.
