Track & Field - Video Game Classic Series South Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

RetiredGuy: Farewell Florida

Dear Fellow Geocachers,

In 2011, I created the Video Game Classic Series South to celebrate video games from the 1970’s and 1980’s. The series grew to having 50 caches with container, location, or puzzle connected to the classic video games. Having almost all of the containers be themed meant that maintaining them has been difficult but well worth it. The series has had 5700 cache finds by 1100 different geocachers. I have also maintained a leaderboard of cachers’ progress in the series, now with fourteen cachers having found all 50 caches.

In March of 2020, my wife and I moved back to Boston to be near our first grandchild and I can no longer maintain the caches. I will be archiving them when they go missing or have serious issues. While you can still access the leaderboard by clicking on this message, all 50 caches will no longer be available to find.

I deeply enjoyed the Florida geocaching community. Should you make it to Boston, feel free to look up my caches or me while you are in the area.
Best regards and keep on cachin’
Doug

Geocache Description:

You are looking for a discus that was tossed from the nearby track and field. There is plenty of room for TBs in this cache. Please do not pull the container from the host.

Track & Field was a 1983 Olympic-themed arcade game developed and published by Konami. The arcade version was released in 1983. The Atari 2600 version was written in Massachusetts at General Computer by Jacques Hugon and Seth Lipkin. The Atari 7800 version was also developed at General Computer by Dave Brown, Seth Lipkin, Greg Munster, and Rob Harris.

In the original arcade game, the player uses two "run" buttons and one "action" button to control an athlete competing in following six events: • 100 Meter Dash – Running by quickly alternating button presses. • Long jump – Running by alternating button press and correct timing for jump. Hold jump button to set angle. • Javelin throw – Running by alternating button presses and then using action button correct timing for angle (~42 degrees is optimal). • 110 Meter Hurdles – Running by alternating button presses and using action button to time hurdles • Hammer throw – Spinning initiated by pressing a run button once and then correctly timed press of action button to choose angle (45 is optimal). • High jump – Running (speed set by computer) and then action button must be held down to determine angle of jump. Once in the air, the run button can be rapidly pressed for additional height.

You will find the cache located near a track and field. Though there was a javelin throw and a hammer throw in the Track & Field game, there was no discus throw, so I thought one should be added. So imagine that an extremely good discus thrower tossed the discus out of the field and all the way into the trees. Now it is you job to retrieve it.
