Geocache Description:

This cache is one of five at National Trust sites around South Bedfordshire (A further 10 caches are located at Dunstable and Whipsnade Downs). It is situated at Totternhoe Knolls which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, common land and Open Access Land.

The nature reserve is split into three distinct habitats: The Beech wood; The Castle Mound which consists of the remains of a motte and bailey castle built in the late 11th or early 12th century together with remnants of cultivation terraces; and The Little Hills. Once a medieval stone quarry, the Little Hills are managed by the Wildlife Trust and are an important site for a wide range of chalk grassland flowers and butterflies, including rare orchids.

The surrounding area is criss-crossed by a network of bridleways and footpaths and there is a car park and picnic area.

The cache is best approached from 'inside' the motte and bailey not the track that runs alongside it as it is a bit of a scramble otherwise. Try starting by walking towards the mound (there is a fantastic view from the top of here) and then circle around to the correct co-ordinates.

In addition to swag and a logbook, each of our countryside caches (Tree Cathedral; Motte and Bailey; Beech Woods and Chalk Hills; Picnic Glade; Hazel Coppice and Hill Fort) contains an ink stamp. Bring a piece of paper with at least three stamps on it to the Chilterns Gateway Centre (N51’51.906, W000’32.261,) to exchange for a ‘geocaching genius’ certificate.
