This cache has been archived.

BruceTP: Thanks again to everybody who attended, to those who contributed either by presenting or providing food or both. It was a great time and I really enjoyed it, despite the rain. I look forward to seeing all of you again at the next techno event on 21 April 2012 and remember to bring a newbie with you!

How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

This will be the eighth in the series Techno Events and the first for 2012. Just when you were comfortable with and thought you had mastered GSAK v7, a spectre loomed large on the horizon in the form of GSAK v8. Those who attended any of the previous sessions learned a great deal about GSAK v7 and how to master it. There have been questions raised on the Forum and talk at the events about GSAK v8 and what it can and can't do.

Also, many of you are extending your command on technology and using an iPad and other tablet or mobile device for caching. We shall be presenting an overview of these devices and what geocaching apps, both free and paid for apps are available and what the functionality of each is. So, this is a chance to get together to meet other cachers and harness the available technology to make your geocaching a more enjoyable pastime. The venue has limited seating (20) for those who want to come and join us between 13:00 and 17:00 to see the technology in action as well as to hear what the seasoned geocachers have to say about their experiences. So, whether you are a geocacher with 1 or 1000+ cache finds to your name come along and share what technology has to offer. The old hands will be available to give individual customised tutoring if that is what you require. There should be someone available who will be able to help you solve your questions.

If you would like to join us for the technical session, please post your attendance early as seating is on a "first come first served" basis. However, should you want to come just to meet up with everybody and renew caching friendships, discover some new coins or just enjoy a sundowner, braai fires will be available from 17:00 onwards. Please bring along your own "dop & chop".
If you are attending the first session and you have a laptop / Macbook / iPad or whatever that you can bring along, there is a WiFi as well as wired network to enable you to apply your newly acquired knowledge and experiment with the new tools. Refreshments will also be provided during the breaks throughout the afternoon. When logging your intended attendance, please indicate whether you will be coming to the "byte", "bite" or both. This will help us with the necessary logistical arrangements.
The full program for the afternoon may be subject to change but here goes...

13:00 Welcome, settle in and get online.

13:15 - 14:15 First lecture session. Anton Damhuis (DamhuisClan) will present GSAK v8 with all the bells and whistles.

14:15 - 14:30 Refreshments will be served.

14:30 - 15:30 Practical: This will be a hands on time as well as a Q&A dealing with any specific issues which may arise from the first session. Also, if you are new and just struggling with your newly acquired GPS unit, now is the time to ask the questions: like - How do I load all the geocaches into my GPS and access them? There will always be someone with an answer for you. For the Mac addicts out there, Villiagegoers will give a practical demonstration of BaseCamp running on a Mac.

15:30 - 16:00 More refreshments, smoke break and munchies.

16:00 - 17:00 The second lecture session will be presented by Graham aka Thomas Family. He will cover the iPad and in particular the app called GeoSphere. If time permits, he will deal with other apps both free and paid for the iPad. Other mobile devices and their geocaching apps available will be covered if there is sufficient interest. If you have an android please indicate so in your "Will attend". We can spend a few minutes on going through one or two apps included in this session as well.

17:00 till whenever... Braai, socialising, swapping coins, discovering new coins while having a great time enjoying yourselves to the full. There may be a limited amount of geocaching hardware available but with the high current R/$ exchange rate it has not been viable to bring in much stock. Please bring along whatever you want to eat and drink and enjoy meeting everybody else.
