Black Hole Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

chaosmanor: As near as we can tell, based on where this cache was, the fact that another of our caches out here has gone missing, and the fact that other COs have reported missing caches, COSCA is getting serious about wanting caches to be near trails. Fine with us, although if they did remove this, as we suspect they did, it would have been nice if they had made an attempt to contact us; they know how to use this website. Be that as it may, this cache is gone and it is not worth replacing, so we are archiving it. If someone else wants the spot, have at it, but make sure that you find a spot close to the trail, such as it is.

Geocache Description:

A nice hike on a basically-flat road, then a good, well-traveled single-track. You are looking for a camo-painted pill bottle. This cache is an adjunct to, but not a part of, the Solar System Tour series. [236/204]

Singularities: the stuff of science fiction. Popularly called "black holes", these super-dense objects are the remnants of large stars that have collapsed upon themselves after the force of gravity overcomes elementary-particle repulsion. The collapse will cause all matter and light to disappear inside an "event horizon", and no light (in fact, no information of any sort) can escape. Theoretically. Depending upon which theory and interpretation you use.

Do black holes really exist? The General Theory of Relativity predicts that they do, and in a few spots we can see strange gravitational effects that might imply that a black hole is there. We know that neutron stars exist; these are vaguely similar to, but smaller than, black holes. At some point in the future, we might actually be able to study one at closer range.

In the meantime, we have lots of TV programs, cartoons and stories that describe these objects, or even postulate how we might be able to cross vast distances and times by using black holes as a sort of universe subway system.

Shortly after you turn off the main road onto the path that leads here, you will travel through an area that has an eerie similarity to various fictional depictions of faster-than-light travel. Think Star Trek when the Enterprise goes into warp, or any of a number of cartoons.

The cache is SW of the path, about 33 meters away and about 1.7 meters up. There is an obvious route to take from the path which should avoid any bush-whacking. If you continue on the path, you will come very close to the water treatment plant.

Good luck! Have fun
