Geocache Description:

This should be a fast park and grab, but will take you to one of the truly interesting places in town.

The Onancock High School was first opened in 1859 as the Atlantic Female Institution, a college for young women. It was established by a Baptist minister and people from as far away as the Western Shore attended.

In 1877 it became the Onancock Academy and taught history, English, Latin, Greek, German, French, science, instrumental and vocal music and bookeeping. Rowing and skating were taught as well. In 1893 the Academy merged with the Margaret Academy and moved to College Avenue at its present site.

The school grew over the next few years, with a new school being built in 1921. As Cashville and Onley schools closed the students came to Onancock and two new wings of the building were added.

The last classs graduated from Onancock High School in 1984.

In 2006 though, the building was returned to the Town of Onancock. The Friends of Onancock School was created, with the mission to revitalize the property.
The school now is the home to many local artists. There are painters, colored glass workers, potters, weavers and photographers in the school. Their studios are often open to the public. Onancock's "Second Friday" is a great opportunity to see the artists, have some refreshment and enjoy some great music at the school.

For a small town (about 1,600) Onancock has many artists. There are at least 5 art galleries in town as well as a playhouse that has new plays at least once a month.
