Geocache Description:

Visit the village of Rapidan on the Norfolk Southern line and see its railroading past and
present! And find one of the geocaches in the Railroad Knutz series while you are there!!

Rapidan gets its name from the Rapidan River on the banks of which the village sits. The village once was a stop on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, now part of the Norfolk Southern Railway, which realigned the tracks to be further up the hill in order to overcome the frequent flooding of the railbed that occurred when the tracks were so close to the river and low. Pictured here is an Amtrak train headed north on the new higher railbed as seen from the older lower railbed.

The old freight and passenger depots that sat on the original line still exist and remain very well-kept. Also here, but barely hanging on, is an old caboose that sits across the street from where this cache is hidden.

The cache is hidden right on the old railbed, a short portion of which has been converted to a walking trail. Parking can be found at either end of the trail.

This cache is part of the Railroad Knutz series by the Cachew Knutz. For information about the series and the fabulous golden spike for the first to find the whole series, please check out the ultimate cache in the series, RR Knutz: The Golden Spike.

As small and remote as the village of Rapidan may be, it does boast a second geocache! That is Rapidan Trail, which is an easy walk from this cache, so try to find that while you are here, if you haven't already had the pleasure.
