Geocache Description:

Travel the route of the famous flank march of Stonewall Jackson! And find
one of the geocaches in the Railroad Knutz series while you are there!!

During the 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville the still unfinished railroad that came to be called the Virginia Central Railway years later figured prominently in the movement of Confederate troops west from Fredericksburg and, as the pictured sign describes, was the scene of some intense fighting. It was along what is now named Jackson Trail that Jackson led his troops south away from the Union forces before veering back north and then east in a flanking movement widely considered one of the greatest military maneuvers in history.

The scene above is facing west along the railroad right-of-way. Just to the east of this spot is where the railroad crossed Lewis Run. The bridge is long gone, but some of the stone from its abutments remains, and that is where you will find this cache.

For more information about the history of the Virginia Central Railway and plans for its re-development as a public greenway, please go to Virginia Central Railway Trail.

This cache is part of the Railroad Knutz series by the Cachew Knutz. For information about the series and the fabulous golden spike for the first to find the whole series, please check out the ultimate cache in the series, RR Knutz: The Golden Spike.

The first geocache the Cachew Knutz ever tried to find is close by. It is so cleverly hidden, though, that it took three visits and a hint from the cache owner combined with a hint from the logs before we finally found it. It is a definitely a favorite and we encourage you to try for Jackson Trail Too while you are so close, if you haven't already had the pleasure.
