Geocache Description:

Visit the Raintree neighborhood to see how residential development
complicates opening of the Virginia Central Railway Trail! And find one
of the geocaches in the Railroad Knutz series while you are there!!

Back in 1992 Spotsylvania County opened a two mile section of the old Virginia Central Railway a little way east of the Raintree neighborhood as a public greenway. The county has plans to open other portions of the right-of-way and hopes that the City of Fredericksburg to the east and Orange County to the west will do the same, so that a 38 mile long greenway can be established. Complicating matters is the encroachment of residential development around the right-of-way and the fact that the term 'right-of-way' is a actually a misnomer, because the county unwisely allowed the property to fall into disparate private hands rather than buying the land for public use which it could have done back when the railroad was abandoned. Now, the county is having to tread lightly in planning to extend the trail and will likely need to re-route the trail in many places to accommodate the NIMBYs.

But it is hard to imagine anyone having concern about a beautiful greenway becoming so conveniently available to them and sharing it with quiet users like hikers, joggers, bicyclists and, of course, the stealthiest of them all, geocachers. For it wasn't very long ago that freight trains rumbled through belching smoke, cinder and ashes, like Virginia Central 1022 pictured above heading west to Orange around 1935.

Raintree is one of the areas that the county anticipates it will route the trail around, but when you visit here and see how lovely this section of trail is you will realize the shame of it. The cache is located beside a scenic pond on the railroad bed where it passes through this neighborhood. A greater than usual amount of stealth may be required here since several residences have a view of this area, although the cache has been placed in an effort to minimize the view. The Cachew Knutz recommend bringing a trash bag with you to do some CITO and provide some cover for your presence. Unfortunately, a fair amount of neighborhood trash winds up in the pond and along its shore, so each visitor to the cache should have an opportunity to do some clean-up.
