Geocache Description:

Visit Hamilton's Crossing of the CSX line and the
adjacent national park! And find one of the geocaches
in the Railroad Knutz series while you are there!!

The crossing was named for Captain George Hamilton whose home, "Forest Hill," stood on a knoll just southwest of the intersection. In the Civil War this landmark constituted the right anchor of General "Stonewall" Jackson's Confederate line in the Battle of Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862. It was also the supply base for the Southern army during the Fredericksburg Campaign after the depot in Fredericksburg came within range of Union artillery in late November 1862 and trains were not permitted to go further north. Read more at www.nps.gov/frsp/hctrail.

This is a picture of Prospect Hill which is at the end of Lee Drive in the park. There is a nice parking area here and it is an easy walk along a trail to Hamilton's Crossing where the cache is located. If you want to cache and dash then you can take a different road and pull up right to the cache site, but the Cachew Knutz recommend Prospect Hill since it is a great place from which to watch the trains rolling by below. We've even had engineers acknowledge our waves with a blast of the horn!

This cache is part of the Railroad Knutz series by the Cachew Knutz. For information about the series and the fabulous golden spike for the first to find the whole series, please check out the ultimate cache in the series, RR Knutz: The Golden Spike.
