The Short History of the Saint Stephen Church
Every time I drive by here my heart skips a beat when the the small medieval church appears in the bend of Route 6, with the white tombstones near it, the forest behind it, and the mountain above it. It is beautiful in every season, but probably is the pretties in the snowy whiteness or around All Saints' Day with the tiny candle lights in the hillside cemetery.
The first church here was erected by Stephen I, Hungary's first king in the first part of the 11th century. A base walls and the western front are from this original church.
The tower was erected during the extension in the 13th century. It is the original construction up to the second floor, to the horizontal "tooth" pattern. The building was enlarged again in the 14th century.
During the time of King Sigmund (ruled 1387-1437) the inner walls were decorated by murals depicting the lives of saints.
During the 15th-16th century the church was fortified by a rectangular tower on the south side and wall all around it.
German settlers arrived in the village after the Turkish times, in 1718. Their first homes were built on the hillside around the church, where houses stood previously. They finished renovating the church by 1723.
As the village grew it extended towards the valley. The old church was inconveniently far and also, too small, so a new church, named after Saint George was built by 1771. This much larger church built in baroque style in the center of the village is also worth a visit.
After the new church was consecrated, the liturgical use of the small Saint Stephen church has declined. Currently it is used as the cemetery chapel, but masses and weddings are also held here occasionally.
The cemetery on the southwest side of the church is also noteworthy.
There are a few cross-shaped tombstones from the mid-18th (!) century, marking the resting places of the first German settlers. I also found the colorful, painted tombstones from the first of the 20th century very interesting. The cemetery is still in use, the newest graves are the furthest away from the church.
How can you get there?
Mecseknádasd is 30 km northeast from Pécs. The church is on the left side of the road right before entering the village. But, the loveliest view is when arriving from the direction of Bonyhád (Budapest) or form the village.
There is no railway coming here, but the bus schedule is pretty good, both from Pécs or Bonyhád. The bus ride takes 40 minutes - 1 hour from Pécs, 16-40 minutes from Bonyhád. The buses stop in front of the church.
How can you get in?
The gate on the wall surrounding the cemetery is always open. The church can be visited if arranged by the caretaker, József Bechli + 36 70 225-2658

A Szent István templom rövid története
Valahányszor erre járok, megdobban a szívem, amikor a 6-os út kanyarulatában elöbukkan ez a kis Árpád-kori templom, mellette a fehéren világító sírkövek, mögötte az erdö, fölötte a hegy. Minden évszakban gyönyörüséges, de a legszebb talán a havas csendben, vagy halottak napja környékén, a domboldali temetöben világló kis gyertyafényekkel.
Az elsö templomot I. István király emeltette ide. A XI. századból származnak az alapfalak és a nyugati homlokzati fal. A ma is álló torony a XIII. századi bövítés során épült. A második emeletig (a fogsoros párkány magasságáig) eredeti. A XIV. században ismét bövítették az épületet. Zsigmond idején falait szentek életét bemutató freskókkal díszítették.
A XV-XVI. században védmüveket építettek a templom mellé, köré: egy mára már elpusztult négyszögletü tornyot a déli oldalon és körítöfalat. A kerítöfal egyben támfal is, a keleti és az északi oldal talajerózióját akadályozza.
A török idökben elpusztult faluba 1718-tól érkeztek német telepesek, akik elsö házaikat a hegyoldalba, a középkori templom köré építették, ahol a korábbi házak is álltak. A templomot 1723-ra felújították.
Ekkoriban a lapos részeket nádas-zsombékos borította a hegyröl ide ömlö Öreg- (vagy Rák-), ma Réka-patak miatt. Erre a környezeti jellegzetességre utal a falu neve is.
A község ahogy növekedett, a nádas területeket megszüntették, völgy felé kezdtek terjeszkedni. Túl messzinek és túl szükösnek bizonyult már Isten régi háza. 1771-ben szentelték fel a szintén megtekintésre érdemes, jóval nagyobb, barokk stílusban épült Szent György templomot, az akkori falu közepén. Ennek elkészülte után a kisméretü régi Szent István templom liturgikus használata csökkent. Jelenleg temetökápolnaként müködik, de évente többször tartanak szentmisét is és idönként esküvöket is.
Érdemes szétnézni a templomtól délnyugatra húzódó temetöben is.
A rejtek közelében néhány 1700-as évek közepéröl megmaradt kereszt alakú sírkö alatt az elsö német telepesek nyugszanak. Érdekesek az 1900-as évek elsö feléböl származó színesre festett sírkövek is, máshol még sosem láttam ilyet. A temetö ma is müködik, az új sírok a templomtól legtávolabb esö részen vannak.
Hogy jutsz ide?
Mecseknádasd Pécstöl 30 km-re, északkeletre fekszik. A templom mindjárt a faluba érkezés elött található az út bal oldalán. A szép panoráma azonban akkor tárul elénk, ha Bonyhád (Budapest) irányából, vagyis a falu felöl közelítünk. A templom elötti parkolóba is így tudunk szabályosan, biztonsággal bekanyarodni.
Vonat nem jár erre, viszont a buszközlekedés Pécsröl és Bonyhád felöl is jó. Pécsröl 40 perc-1 óra, Bonyhádról 16-40 perc a menetidö, járattól függöen. A busz a templom elött áll meg.
