Geocache Description:

Cross from San Damiano

Our cache, we have established to commemorate the saint of St. Francis, who hold great respect to the cross.

Cross from San Damiano played an important role in the life of St. Francis. We do not want to write all his biography (who wants to know more, just click on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_of_Assisi), our cache is looked to the cross, which at times of St. Francis was located in the church of San Damiano in Italy.
The church of San Damiano is from 6th to 7th century. A.D. and when it St. Francis appeared, was damaged and abandoned. And just here St. Francis came into contact with a cross, which have left deep marks. This cross is later named after this church - the cross from San Damiano. It was originally hung in the presbytery, and although there is not a large (210 x 130 cm), creating the impression that fills apse (semicircle, half dome vaulted space in front of the temple). Just before that of Cross St. Francis spent the whole day and this contemplation is transformed into a mystic Cross, who accompanied him to the end of life. That's why his letters signed sign of the cross ("t") and the religious habit had adapted to this sing. The present the Cross is in the church of St. Damian in one of the chapels in the Basilica of St. Clare of Assisi. From the beginning belonged to the most valuable relics of the Franciscan and today is the world's most frequently reproduced icons of the crucified Christ.
