People travel across the world to come to this little village,
to visit the retreat centre at the Manor House.
There's been a settlement here since saxon times but at the
heart of the village now there are a very few buildings other than
the church and Manor House. The Manor was built in 1652, eventually
became part of the Ashburnham estate along the way and was
therefore owned by John Bickersteth.
In 1956, Bickersteth sold the house to Paul and Rosalind
Broomhall. The children of foreign missionaries, they had been
missionaries themselves and at the Manor House they created a
retreat centre for missionaries on leave back in the UK.
The churchyard is filled with the graves of just a few families
- including the Bickersteths and Broomhalls - and there's a
tenderness and sense of family in that graveyard. I believe Harry H
Corbett is also buried there.
