Church micro 2041: St Michael Archangel, Penhurst. Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

Bhanacharaid: I haven't lived in the area for some years and although I return a couple of times a year, I just don't get around to maintaining most of my old caches. Friends who also helped have also moved on so it's time to close them all down, and make room for new ones.

Geocache Description:

Gather clues from the churchyard to find the cache, which is a short walk away. A place of quiet beauty and stillness. The church is rarely open - but it has an elegant simplicity and is worth seeing if you can.

People travel across the world to come to this little village, to visit the retreat centre at the Manor House.

There's been a settlement here since saxon times but at the heart of the village now there are a very few buildings other than the church and Manor House. The Manor was built in 1652, eventually became part of the Ashburnham estate along the way and was therefore owned by John Bickersteth.

In 1956, Bickersteth sold the house to Paul and Rosalind Broomhall. The children of foreign missionaries, they had been missionaries themselves and at the Manor House they created a retreat centre for missionaries on leave back in the UK.

The churchyard is filled with the graves of just a few families - including the Bickersteths and Broomhalls - and there's a tenderness and sense of family in that graveyard. I believe Harry H Corbett is also buried there.

CLUES: Identify the number associated with each letter and put them into the following formula to find the cache:
