Geocache Description:

Magnetic nano neatly in RH angle of the support for the name board.

This is a Grade 1 listed building. The body of the church is largely C15th but it was practically rebuilt in 1815 when the screen was removed and the central tower taken down and rebuilt at the W end where it houses 6 bells. The bells were cast in the same foundry as the “Bow Bells” which were destroyed in bombing raids in WW2.The villagers refused to allow these bells to be taken to replace those lost and so St.John`s retains its “Bow Bells”. The chancel and nave and north aisle are separated by arches on fluted columns. The font has carving round the bowl with a broader carved band and scallops. The north aisle is known as the Lyndridge aisle and has several memorials to successive owners. The South wall outside has a carving which was originally the tympana of the south doorway –it represents the Adoration of the magi –the figures of the Wise men are in a good state of preservation The interior of the church had a major make-over in 2011. At the end of the churchyard are odd tanks which contain the remains of C17th plague victims. If nothing else do spend a moment to look at the doorway to the right of the tower. There are carvings of grotesque heads of birds and beasts with chevrons and other mouldings and the capitals of the pillars are well carved with figures and foliage. “If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats page found via the Bookmark list”
