Con motivo del centenario de la Constitución de 1812 y aprovechando el solar dejado tras el derribo de las murallas del frente del puerto, se decidió levantar un gran monumento homenaje a la labor de las Cortes durante el sitio francés sobre Cádiz, y al texto constitucional que logró poner los cimientos de un nuevo orden político y social en España.
Bajo la denominación de Monumento al Sitio y las Cortes de Cádiz, su construcción comenzó a principios de 1912 bajo la dirección del arquitecto Modesto López Otero y con esculturas de Aniceto Mariñas, auqnue no fue inaugurado hasta 1929.
Con forma de hemiciclo o semicírculo, tratando de representar la forma de las salas de Cortes, presenta diversos relieves y representaciones iconográficas que referencia al trascendental hecho histórico y los que esto supuso para el devenir de Cádiz y la nación.
To mark the centenary of the Constitution of 1812 and using the site left after the demolition of the walls of the harbor front, it was decided to erect a great memorial tribute to the work of the courts during the French siege of Cadiz, and the constitutional text succeeded in laying the foundations for a new political and social order in Spain.
Under the name of Memorial Site and the Cortes of Cadiz, its construction began in early 1912 under the direction of architect Modesto López Otero and Aniceto Marinas sculpture; although it was not inaugurated until 1929.
Chamber shaped or semicircle, trying to represent the shape of the Congress’ rooms, presents various reliefs and iconographic representations transcendental reference to historical fact and that this meant for the future of Cadiz and the nation.
