O Lombo Grande situa-se na freguesia de São Roque do Faial, concelho de Santana.
A 27 de Setembro de 2011 inaugurou-se a vereda do Lombo Grande, uma vereda já existente, mas agora recuperada e com excelentes condições para um bonito passeio até à Ribeira do Ribeiro Frio, e consequentemente à nascente do Castelejo, uma das mais importantes nascentes do norte da ilha.
O trilho desenvolve-se entre os 450 metros e os 310 metros de altitude. Ao caminharmos em direcção à nascente podemos constatar as cadências da vida rural, destacando-se os pequenos terrenos agrícolas minuciosamente cultivados e as suas práticas tradicionais de regadio.
Após passarmos o Córrego da Marujo deparamo-nos com a predominância do coberto vegetal originário da Madeira e floresta Laurissilva classificada de Património Mundial Natural pela UNESCO, desde 1999, onde se destaca Loureiros, Folhados e Vinháticos.
Chegado à ribeira do Ribeiro Frio deixe-se envolver pelo cenário à sua volta, contemplando o exuberante vale, e apreciando as margens da ribeira, responsável pela divisão administrativa dos concelhos de Santana e Machico.
The Lombo Grande is located on the parish of São Roque do Faial, municipality of Santana.
On September 27, 2011 opened up the path of the Lombo Grande, a path that already exists, but now refurbished and offers excellent conditions for a nice walk to Ribeira do Ribeiro Frio, and consequently the source of the Castelejo, one of the most important sources of the northern island.
The trail develops between 450 meters and 310 meters. As we move towards the east we can see the cadences of rural life, especially the small carefully cultivated agricultural land and their traditional irrigation practices.
After passing the Córrego da Marujo we are faced with the predominance of the original vegetation of Madeira – the Laurel forest classified as a World natural Heritage by UNESCO since 1999, which highlights the Laurel, Folhados and Vinháticos.
Arriving at the ribeira do Ribeiro Frio and soak up the scenery around him, gazing at the lush valley, and enjoying the banks of the river, responsible for administrative division of the municipalities of Santana and Machico.

Este percurso tem uma distância de 2,4 km e pode ser feito calmamente numa hora. Deverá iniciar a sua caminhada em N 32º45.555’ W 16º 51.567’.
A cache encontra-se quase no final do percurso, escondida numa árvore acima do trilho. As coordenadas poderão não ser muito correctas devido à abundância de árvores na zona, pelo que é importante seguir a pista e as imagens spoiler.
Após encontrar esta geocache, continue a vereda até o seu término. Repouse e desfrute da natureza que o envolve junto à ribeira.
Poderá também fazer esta cache pela freguesia do Porto da Cruz, em N 32º 46.037’ W 16º 51.047’, seguindo a seta “Levada do Castelejo”. Este percurso tem uma distância de 5 km até à Ribeira do Ribeiro Frio, e pode ser feito em cerca de 1 hora e 15 minutos. Chegado à ribeira encontre à sua direita o início do percurso da vereda do Lombo Grande, e siga a pista.
This route has a distance of 2,4 km and can be done quietly in an hour. You should start your walk at N 32°45,555' W 16°51,567'.
The cache is near the end of the course, hidden in a tree above the footpath. The coordinates may not be very accurate due to the abundance of trees in the area, so it is important to follow the hint and the spoiler images.
After finding this geocache, continue the path until it ends. Rest and enjoy the nature that surrounds you along the river.
You can also do this cache for the parish of Porto da Cruz, at N 32°46,037' W 16°51,047', following the arrow "Levada do Castelejo." This route has a distance of 5 km to the ribeira do Ribeiro Frio, and can be done in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Arriving at the river on your right to find the beginning of the route of the path of the Lombo Grande, and follow the track.
