Geocache Description:

By Gum - a series in the lovely woods beyond Gummer's How.  This cache links GH and the series in the woods, 'starting' with No.8, then 9.  It's also a lovely spot and the cache is inspired by comments from Tashington, echoed by Safie!

A simple offset cache (although be careful with the clues!) which will take you to a disused reservoir tucked between Gummer's How and Birch Fell.  A peaceful and scenic spot and an excellent place for geohounds!  You can get to this from:

  • The usual parking for Gummer's How.  Either visit the summit and then head over the back, down to here, or divert E around the summit and visit here first.  See stile waypoint.
  • Or, you can come up from the back road, parking in a large forest gateway, see waypoint.
  • Or, done as part of the By Gum series - No.8 isn't very far away and paths lead between the two.  Park as for No.1

The corodinates will take you to the dam of the reservoir.  Stand at the point and check the quadrant between N & W.  Look for the tallest, straightest silver birch.  The cache is along this line between you and the birch; about 50m distant from dam, and close to a small pine tree.  Now all you have to do is go and find it! Go round East side of tarn. It's a small vial - please tuck in and rehide well, so it's out of sight.

On a sunny day the reservoir is a lovely place to sit and revel in the world around you.  Enjoy.
