Geocache Description:

The Caledonian Canal, engineered by Thomas Telford, was completed in 1822 and connects the north east of Scotland (Inverness) to the west (Corpach near Fort William). The route of the canal runs along the natural fault known as the Great Glen. The hand dug channels connect the 4 natural lochs, Loch Lochy, Loch Oich, Loch Ness and Loch Dochfour. Built as a safer and quicker way for ships to travel between the west and north east coasts, the route was out of date by the time it was completed as ships became wider and transport of goods by rail became more efficient. There are many examples of great engineering along the canal, famously the locks (most notably 'Neptune's Staircase'). However, the aqueduct at Torcastle is a more subtle feature and is a fantastic structure to explore! The Aqueduct carries the canal over the waters of Allt Sheangain, which runs through two of the tunnels. The third tunnel is paved and allows vehicles to pass under the canal. From the road B8004 (road from Banavie to Gairlochy) pass under the aqueduct. There is a short footpath from the road up to the canal, the cache is located just off the path. If approaching from the canal, take the path down towards the cache and make sure to go to the bottom of the path to get a good view of the tunnels!
