Het Kleine Bos Traditional Geocache
John & Chantal: Helaas is onze cache "Het Kleine Bos" ontdekt door niet-geocachers en gesloopt.
Bedankt voor alle leuke logjes in de 5 1/2 jaar dat de cache hier heeft mogen liggen.
Omdat de kans is groot is dat hij bij het herplaatsen weer gevonden wordt door anderen hebben we besloten hem te archiveren.

In het weekend maken wij geregeld een wandeling in "het kleine bos" zoals het vaak door onze kinderen genoemd wordt.
De cache ligt in de Hoekse Bosjes, welke deel uitmaakt van de Kapittelduinen. De Hoekse Bosjes vormen als duinzoombos de overgang tussen het duingebied en het dorp Hoek van Holland. Dit natuurgebied is vrij toegankelijk en u kunt het op eigen gelegenheid verkennen.
Hoekse Bosjes
In 1919 is de gemeente begonnen met het aanplanten van het 11 hectare grote bos wat destijds dienst deed als stadspark. In 1996 hebben de Kapittelduinen, waar ook de Hoekse Bosjes onder vallen, een natuuraanwijzing gekregen. Het streven is nu om de bosjes om te vormen tot een natuurijk duinzoombos, met meer structuur en betere verbindingen met de omliggende gebieden.
Natuurlijker waterpeil
In tegenstelling tot in veel duingebieden van Nederland wordt er in deze duinen geen grondwater gewonnen. Dit vergroot de kansen voor een natuurlijker waterbeheer, waarbij het waterpeil 's winters hoger staat dan 's zomers. Hiervan profiteren tal van planten, vogels en amfibieën. Nu al foerageren ijsvogels in de aanwezige vijvers en komen kamsalamanders hier tot voortplanting. Door een natuurlijker waterbeheer zullen droge, soortenarme delen van het bos plaatsmaken voor veel rijkere bostypen met iepen, elzen, eiken en essen; het natuurlijk bos van de duizoom.
Natuur in ontwikkeling
Door verbetering van de bosstructuur zal ook de variatie aan planten en dieren in de Hoekse Bosjes toenemen. Doordat het bos hier in het verleden is aangeplant mist het de natuurlijke opbouw, met een kruidenlaag, struiklaag en meerdere boomlagen. Het bosbeheer is gericht op de ontwikkeling van deze structuur en op het achterlaten van dood hout in het bos. Hierdoor onstaan broedmogelijkheden voor de groene specht en tal van andere holenbroeders.

Je bent op zoek naar een tupperware doos die verstopt zit in een houten bekisting in de grond.
Laat de cache a.u.b. zo achter zoals je hem gevonden hebt, dus weer goed verstoppen!

During the weekends we often go for a walk in “the little forest” (in dutch: “het kleine bos”). The little forest is the name our kids use for this part of Hoek van Holland. Officially these woods are called “de Hoekse bosjes”.
Hoek van Holland can be translated to English as Corner of Holland, as it is the geographic south-west corner of the former province called Holland.
The cache is placed in this forest, which is part of the “Kapittel dunes” area. It is the area in between the Dunes and the village of Hoek van Holland. It is freely accessible for walking and there is a bike trail in the middle of this little forest. The nearby vineta Dunes, to the west, are not accessible to the public. So please don’t go to the other side of the hill on the west side while looking for the cache.
Hoekse Bosjes
In 1919 the 11 acre forest was created by the city of Rotterdam to serve as a public park. In 1996 the park has been given a special status. This was done to preserve the nature and to give nature more room to develop the forest by itself in a natural way common to dune areas. Also the connection to other surrounding areas will be improved.
Natural water level
Unlike a lot of other Dune areas in the Netherlands, no (drinking) water is being extracted from this area. This ensures nature itself will be in charge of the water level, resulting in high water levels in winter and low water levels during the summer. This is beneficial to al lot of plants, birds an amphibians. Kingfishers have been spotted here and the crested newt lives and breeds here successfully. Due to the natural water management, the flora in the area will be more diverse than in other, more dry, dune areas. Oak, chestnut, elm, alder and ashes all grow here.
Nature under development
Due to the efforts to let nature take its own course in this forest, the number of plant and animal species will increase. Because this forest is originally man-made, it misses a certain normal build-up of vegetation including small herb-like plants on the ground, medium sized buses and larger trees. The forest management is aimed at stimulating this development. Dead and fallen trees aren’t removed, but will remain in the forest to create a habitat for bottom dwellers and also birds like woodpeckers like this.
