There are still many reminders of the Second World war in Brunssum. In the memories and recollections of its citizens, for example. Or its war memorials. Sometimes, concerts are organized the commemorate the sacrifices made and the victory won. The scars of the Second World War are likewise present, such as the British War Cemetery, where 328 British soldiers found their final resting place. The soldiers buried here paid the ultimate price for the battles they fought in the turbulent years of 1944 and 1945. The legacy they leave us is huge. They fell for our freedom, they fell for a just society, they fell for our forbears, for us and for our offspring. We have a duty to cherish this legacy in the spirit of their sacrifice. We should never fail to appreciate the value of democracy, freedom and independence, not least because our soil is drenched with the blood and tear of those who died for us. A few years ago, a survey was held amongst Dutch people to find out their appreciation and perception of the Second World war. The most important conclusion of the survey was that the Second World War is still very much alive, even amongst younger folk. Not in terms of a history lesson, but as an inseparable part of life today. That is a powerful finding, since it means that current and future generations are willing to graft the lessons of the Second World War onto our own surroundings, our own life and our own actions. What happened in the Second World War has slowly become a benchmark. The war has made us more aware of human dignity, human responsibilities, social values – and of the importance of defending these values in our actions, behavior and way of thinking. The Second World War is not history. It is our present and our future. This cemetery marks the resting place of 328 men who helped build the foundations of our society. Their sacrifice may have been many years ago, but it has never been forgotten and their legacy has never waned. We are free, we are privileged and most of all, we are grateful. That is the reason why we cherish monuments from wars past and find expression in this recognition: the sacrifice you made stirs us with courage and inspiration.
In Brunssum is de Tweede Wereldoorlog nog op vele plaatsen aanwezig. Soms in de herinneringen en de verhalen. Of in de oorlogsmonumenten. Soms in bijeenkomsten en concerten die in het teken staan van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Soms is die aanwezigheid in de vorm van littekens, zoals het British War Cemetery, waar 328 Engelse soldaten liggen begraven. De soldaten die hier rusten, hebben een hoge prijs betaald voor de strijd die ze in 1944 en 1945 voerden. Maar hun erfenis is ook enorm. Zij vielen voor onze vrijheid. Zij vielen voor een rechtvaardige samenleving. Zij vielen voor onze voorouders, voor ons, en voor onze kinderen. Op ons rust de plicht om die erfenis te koesteren in de geest van hun offer. Democratie, vrijheid, onafhankelijkheid, het mogen nooit loze kreten worden. Omdat onze bodem doordrenkt is met het bloed en de tranen van hen die ervoor stierven. Een paar jaar geleden is onderzoek gedaan onder de Nederlanders over de waardering en beleving van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Belangrijkste conclusie van dat onderzoek is dat de Tweede Wereldoorlog nog steeds sterk leeft, óók onder jongeren. Niet als een geschiedenisles, maar als een onlosmakelijk onderdeel van ons heden. Dat is een krachtig gegeven, want dit betekent dat huidige én toekomstige generaties bereid zijn om de lessen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog te vertalen naar onze eigen omgeving, ons eigen leven, ons eigen handelen. Wat er gebeurd is in de Tweede Wereldoorlog, is langzamerhand tot een ijkpunt uitgegroeid. Die oorlog heeft ons bewuster gemaakt van menselijke waardigheid, menselijke verantwoordelijkheid, menselijke normen en waarden – en van het belang om al die zaken te verdedigen, in gebaar, gedrag, denken, doen. De Tweede Wereldoorlog is geen geschiedenis. Het is ons heden. En onze toekomst. Op dit kerkhof liggen 328 mannen die het fundament hebben gebouwd van onze samenleving. Hun offer is lang geleden gebracht. Maar het is niet vergeten. En hun erfenis is er niet minder om. Wij zijn vrij. Wij zijn bevoorrecht. En wij zijn, boven alles, dankbaar. Dat is ook de reden waarom we de monumenten uit de oorlogstijd koesteren. Een koestering waarmee we tot uitdrukking willen brengen: we halen moed en inspiratie uit de offers die jullie hebben gebracht.
