Geocache Description:

The ruins of Melissa Fortress are situated near the village of Agios Thomas. The Fortress was built by the Venetians on a high hill in order to control the valleys around. It isn’t very big and its eastern side is naturally protected by quite a steep slope.

There is a small church inside the fortress and the cache is hidden near it. It is a small plastic container with a logbook and a pen.

From that spot, you can enjoy great views over the eastern parts of Mt Psiloritis and Gyristi peak and, towards north, over the Cretan Sea and Dia Island. Towards east and south, you can see all mountains and hills of Heraklion Prefecture.

To get there you have to turn into a cement road (later dirt road) that intersects the main road from Venerato to Agios Thomas. We placed the cache on our hike from Paliani Monastery to Agios Thomas village.

Enjoy the Cretan nature!
