The Church of St Wenappa is founded on an ancient Celtic monastery of the late 5th century. It is noted for its detatched Bell Tower and tall single block pillars. Early 13 century records show Gwennap being used as a cemetery. In the 1700's this church served a huge population and the parish was one of the largest rural parishes in the country. Gwennap mining area has been noted for the production of Tin, Copper and many other metals, and in the 17 & 1800's the parish was known as "The Richest Square Mile in the World". Since the mass exodus of Cornish Miners and their families across the globe, the parish has reduced in population and has twice been "carved up". It is now part of the Benefice of Stithians. Many of the graves contain the remains of Miners, Entrepreneurs, Geoligists, and Engineers who worked in this parish.
If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
