Deutsche Version
1963 entstand der Kinofilm "Gesprengte Ketten" ("The Great
Escape").
Während des zweiten Weltkrieges flüchteten 76 überwiegend
britische Kriegsgefangene aus dem Lager STALAG LUFT III in
Schlesien.
Coburn, David Attenburough, James Garner, Charles Bronson, David
McCallum, Gordon Jackson. Es handelt vom Flight Lieutenant Danny
Willinski "The Tunnel King", gespielt von Charles Bronson.
amerikanische Produktionsteam sehr „deutsch“ aussieht,
also dem entspricht, was das amerikanische Publikum unter
Deutschland versteht.
Bitte eigenen Stift mitbringen.

Gesprengte Ketten #4 „The Great
Escape“
In 1963 the film „The Great Escape“
about the breakout of 76 Brittish and Allied Pilot-POWs from the
camp STALAG LUFT III during WWII. This camp was specially built for
Allied pilots with high escape risk and was run by the German
Luftwaffe. The film is based on a true story, but fictional
elementswere added to the film for better success. The film was
shot in and arroung the picturesque town of Füssen in southern
Bavaria.
This cache is the forth in a series of
caches that deal with this subject. This time it goes back directly
to the high-rated film by John Sturges staring Steve McQueen, James
Coburn, David Attenburough, James Garner, Charles Bronson, David
McCallum, Gordon Jackson. This time it's about Flight Lieutenant Danny Willinski "The
Tunnel King", played by Charles Bronson.
The area around
Füssen offers the scenery for the movie scene as Danny Willinski
(Charles Bronson) and Flight Lieutenant William 'Willie' Dickes
(John Leyton) steal a rowingboat together and row to their escape
– which, at least in the film they eventually
succeed.
Have a
good look at the pictures above. If you have difficulties solving
the riddle – with them you can roughly find the cache
location, so in the end taking a close look at the pictures might
help.
An
intresting fact is that a few fim minutes further, both still in a
rowing boat, hop onto a Swedish freighter in a Baltic port. In
order of row on a boat from Füssen to Lithuania you must, in the
end would have to row more than 15,000 km. At an estimated 30km per
day both, were rowing for approximately 1.5 years. They rowed down
the Danube through the Dardanelles, Gibraltar, up the Atlantic
coast, up through the English Channel (passed England), through the
Skagerrak and across the Baltic Sea. The war would already be over,
before the two were saved. ;-)
By the way, Füssen does
not play any role in the real breakout during WWII. The picturesque
town of Füssen was chosen as the location, because it seemed to be
“very German”, or equivalent to what the American
audiance would expect a German town to look like. I would
appreciate if you upload photos that have been inspired by the
scenes in the movie - just please do not show too much and spoil
the fun for the other cachers.
