This Ridgeway runs along the lower edge of the Chinnor Hill nature reserve. The herb filled chalk grassland is bejewelled with primroses, cowslips and violets in spring. In the summer spotted orchids are in flower, along with twayblades, pyramidal orchids, rock roses and agrimony. Marbled white butterflies flap above the grasses and the common blue sips nectar from marjoram and thyme, while the fast flying dark green fritillary lays its eggs on violets. A higher patch of chalk grassland boasts bee orchids and the scarce chiltern gentian. Where grassland mingles with woodland, scrub provides refuge, food and cover to doormice and worblers in the summer and thrushes including redwings and fieldfares in winter. There are even a few escaped garden flowers, left over from caravans sited here after the war.
