Långshyttan är idag ett välplanerat samhälle med cirka 1800 innevånare. Orten har skola med högstadium.
Här finns sporthall, ishall, vårdcentral, äldreboende liksom En välsorterad mataffär och även apotek
Järnbruket är fortfarande dominerande som arbetsgivare med 400 anställda. De naturliga förutsättningarna för äldre järnhantering - malm från närbelägna gruvor, träkol från skogarna och vattenkraften i ån kring vilken bruket byggdes har idag mist sin betydelse.
Men generationers erfarenhet av stål lever vidare. Bruket har genom förutseende ledare hittat specialprodukter och därvid överlevt. Ett stålverk som producerar tråd och band i höglegerat verktygsstål -snabbstål och Ett som levererar precisionsvalsade rostfria kallvalsade band.
Andra industrier har för orten stor betydelse. En träindustri sysselsätter många i den högmoderna fabriken för limmade träkonstruktioner.
Ett antal småföretag finns även på orten.

Långshyttan, a manufacturing community with not quite 1800 residents.In the old days there were any number of charcoal blast furnaces and forges on the streams of the old parish of Husby, but today Långshyttan is the only surviving ironworks. The local steel industry today is divided between two companies: One that is the world's biggest manufacturer of high-speed steel, and the other, a Cold-rolling mill and one of the world's biggest manufactures of stainless precision strip steel. An early 18th century furnace has been preserved as an industrial monument (inquire at the Kloster- verken gatehouse), and here you can see historic machinery and a locomotive. Next to the hotel is Modellkammaren, a beautiful slag stone building which houses a small mining museum (collect the key at the hotel). Parts of a hot-rolling mill are on display in the grounds, as well as a large flywheel. The old sawmill has a modern factory producing glue laminate structures for the building industry.
