Geocache Description:

Skjoldnæs

Dansk

English

On the Northern point of Ærø, about 5 km from Søby, stands Skjoldnæs Lighthouse.
It was built in 1881 from granite from the Danish island Bornholm, and was designed by a Swedish architect. Also the builder was Swedish, and he was our great(great)grandfather.

Skjoldnæs Lighthouse is 22 meters tall. It’s still in use and the light can be seen 20 nautical miles away.

There is public access to the lighthouse, but you are asked to pay a small entrance fee, which will be used to maintain it. From the top looking North you can see the islands Lyø and Avernakø, to the West Als and in bright weather you can see Germany if you look to the South/West.

In 2005 and 2006 Ærø Golf Club was opened, and the seaside golf course surrounds lighthouse. Today the old home for the lighthouse keeper is turned into a café and clubhouse, and therefore you can take a look inside.

There used to be another cache here, but the owner has chosen to close it, and we were allowed to place a new cache
You do not need to enter the lighthouse to find the cache.
