Geocache Description:

This cache is only accessible using tree climbing ropes, a climbing harness, and appropriate safety gear for you and the tree (climbing helmet, gloves, double locking carabiners, cambium savers, etc).

The cache is 40 feet off the ground and readily visible from ground zero. The camo'd container used to be a pressurized racquetball holder, but now it has a log, pen, some space for small trades/TBs, and of course a mini maglight flashlight for the FTF. The stately red oak that houses this cache is about 100 feet from the gravel road known as the pumpkin trail and shown as an orange loop on this map. Two possible parking areas are noted in the waypoints.

The oak itself is about 70 feet tall with a crown that is nearly 50 feet wide. Other oak trees near GZ are equally impressive including a behemoth white oak 60 feet east (toward the Pumpkin loop road) of the tree of interest.

Technical tree climbing (aka recreational tree climbing) is gaining popularity as a way for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages to experience a different perspective on the forest ecosystem. It's great exercise and exhilarating - yet serene; a great way to confront your fears - yet completely safe if done with proper training.

Here are two videos about technical tree climbing if you are interested in learning more.

Introduction to technical tree climbing.

If you would like to learn to climb, send me an email or check out Piedmont Recreational Tree Climbers http://climbtreesforfun.blogspot.com/. If you want company at GZ for extra peace of mind, I'll gladly make plans to meet you there and can bring all the necessary gear if you don't have your own.

If you don't have the necessary experience, training, and safety gear, attempting this cache could easily result in serious injury or death. Please be careful. Cache seekers assume all risks.
