Geocache Description:

This is another Railroad Series cache. This one is a Reappearing RR series highlighting the return of trains, particularly rail transit to the Portland region.

Welcome to the Portland Streetcar shops and yards located under the I-405 Freeway. Portland Streetcar opened in 2001 and is considered the first modern streetcar line to open in North America.

Streetcars operated in Portland from the 1880's to 1949. Rail transit as a whole ended in the Portland region in 1956~57 with the end of Interurban service to Oregon City.

MAX Light Rail, a term for a modern Interurban, opened between Portland and Gresham in 1986. MAX has since developed into a full regional system with expansions continuing.

In 2001 the Portland Streetcar Line opened between NW Portland and PSU. It differs from MAX in that it stays within the city and operates mostly in mixed traffic with cars (MAX is mostly on private right-of-way). Stops on the streetcar are also relatively closely spaced. The cars utilized are also much smaller then MAX. IT is very much like the streetcars that ran back before 1949.

Portland has truely embraced the streetcar as a method to redevelop districts and move people around the city. In 2012 Portland Streetcar will start operation on Portland's Eastside to OMSI. More expansion plans are considered.

Between MAX, the Streetcar and WES commuter rail, the Portland region is lucky to have a rail alternative to driving. The trains are reliable and clean.

The cache is located next to the yards and shops (Carbarn used to be the term) for the streetcar. Please do not enter the yards and be careful when walking around tracks.

The container is a nano. This is a quick park-n-grab, or even better is it only a 1.5 block walk from the nearest Streetcar stop.

So why not "Go By Streetcar" to geocache.
