A crater lake is a lake that forms in a volcanic crater, caldera, or maar. Incoming precipitation fills the depression to form a deepening lake, until equilibrium is reached between the rate of water coming in and the rate of water loss due to evaporation, subsurface drainage, and possibly also surface outflow if the lake fills the crater up to the lowest point on its rim.
Crater lakes covering active (fumarolic) volcanic vents are often known as volcanic lakes, and the water within them is typically acidic, saturated with volcanic gases and due to that cloudy with a strong greenish colour.
Due to their unstable environment, some crater lakes exist only intermittently. Caldera lakes in contrast can be quite large and long-lasting; for instance, Lake Toba formed after its eruption around 70,000 years ago and has an area of over 1,000 square kilometres. Although many of these crater lakes are well known throughout the world, the Azores Archipelago, situated approximately 1500 km from the Portuguese mainland can also boast some magnificent Crater lakes like this two situated in this natural reserve!
Flores island has seven lagoons formed in seven volcanic craters from eruptions that created the island. Their names are Lagoa negra, Lagoa Branca, Lagoa Comprida, Lagoa Rasa, Lagoa da Lomba, Lagoa Funda and Lagoa Seca. The seven caldera lakes are, to many, the scenic highlights of the Flores Island.
About the EarthCache:
After exploring the area, you must perform four tasks:
1) What can you found in the BIG rock on the GZ?
2) What are the names of the two crater lakes on the GZ?
3) Observe the colour of the two caldera lakes, why does the water have a strong greenish colour?
4) These two caldera lakes are quite unique because being adjacent they are not at the same level. What do you think that, geologically, can explain this?
Also, and despite being optional , please take a photo in GZ with your GPS and show it with your log. be carefull and don’t show the BIG rock

Uma lagoa numa cratera é um lago que se forma em uma cratera vulcânica, cratera, ou maar. A Precipitação de entrada preenche a depressão para formar um lago de aprofundamento, até que o equilíbrio é alcançado entre a taxa de água que entra e a taxa de perda de água devido à evaporação, à drenagem subsuperficial e, eventualmente, se enche até transbordar.
Lagoas cobrindo crateras vulcânicas activas são frequentemente conhecidos como lagos vulcânicos, e a água dentro deles geralmente é ácida, saturada com gases vulcânicos e devido a isso nublado com uma cor forte esverdeada.
A ilha das Flores tem sete lagoas formadas em sete crateras vulcânicas de erupções que criaram a ilha. Os seus nomes são Lagoa Negra, Lagoa Branca, Lagoa Comprida, Lagoa Rasa, Lagoa da Lomba, Lagoa Funda e Lagoa Seca. Os sete lagos em crateras são, para muitos, os pontos de destaque paisagístico da Ilha Flores.

Depois de explorar a area, terá de completer quatro tarefas:
1) O que encontra na GRANDE rocha no local do gz?
2) Quais os nomes das duas lagoas?
3) Como explica a água esverdeada das lagoas?
4) Estas duas lagoas são únicas por, sendo adjacentes não estarem ao mesmo nivel. Geologicamente que explicação adianta para este facto?
Também e apesar de ser opcional, por favor, tire uma foto no GZ com o seu GPS e mostre-a juntamente com o seu log.
