Geocache Description:

This geocache is located in Longview's Victoria Freeman Park.

Victoria Freeman Park is named after Victoria Freeman, a woman who broke down the racial barriers in Longview Public Schools. When the city was built in the 1920's, this neighborhood was to be the "Black" area of town. Longview Schools were for white children only, with the very small number of black children having to attend school in a run down abandoned building from the 1800's.

Mrs. Freeman, fed up with the conditions her children had to deal with, fought hard and eventually got her children into Kessler Elementry School. It was a first step in breaking down the many racial barriers that use to exsist in our city. This park was built in the late 1950's as Clearview Park, and renamed Victoria Freeman Park in 1994.
