NoVAGO Fall Event: Tour de Arlington Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

NoVAGO: A big thanks to Serrabou, Nemo, 2wheel'in and of course the attendees for making this event such a success! Serrabous caches and geocaching challenge were certainly highlights but so was the bike ride for any of those who decided to brave the cold weather. Hopefully next year we can continue the tradition of a bike riding event here in NoVA! Look forward to you all next time!

Geocache Description:

Fall Event

Sunday, October 23rd,
2011

10 AM - 2 PM
Glencarlyn Park, Shelter #2
Arlington, VA

What better way to celebrate Fall than to get together with your NoVAGO friends, old and new? We'll be hosting the event at in Arlington, Virginia: 301 S. Harrison St. Arlington, VA 22204. Here is a park map (.pdf file).

Special Note: NoVAGO events are open to cachers of all experience levels. We particularly invite new cachers to come so they can meet cachers from all around the region!

This park is located near both the Washington & Old Dominion Trail and the Four Mile Run Trail, and the event will be preceded by a biking tour of the area.

There are several geocaches in the park and along the nearby trails. Parking is available at several locations; see the waypoints section. Better yet, arrive on two wheels!

There will be a couple of new caches published the day of the event. For one, you may want to bring along a flashlight and some wading shoes.

Here are the new caches near the event:
Sparrow Pond GC3475A
Roo's Runaway GC34J72

There is also a geocaching.com Challenge, Ghost of a Giant Oak, nearby.

Caching Bike Tour (optional)

A 10 mile caching bike ride on the 4 Mile Run and W&OD trails. The ride will leave from the “Event Parking 3 Waypoint” (PRKNG3) see the Child Waypoint list below. The trails are paved, mostly level, and suitable for riders of all ages and ability. MooseMaMa and 2Wheel’in will conduct the ride. Bike ride caches along the trails can be found on this Bookmark List, and it is suggested that you download the bookmarked caches to your GPS unit prior to arriving on event day. There are currently 17 geocaches along the trails (although the availability of a few are suspect)…rumor has it that there will be at least one new cache placed.

WARNING: We will not be the only riders on the W&OD, the trail gets VERY heavy use on weekends, for your own safety (and that of others) please: Stay to the right - Ride no more than 2 abreast - Get off the paved surface when you stop - Signal your intentions & announce when you are passing - Helmets are mandatory for those under 15, and are strongly encouraged for everyone. Bring a water bottle (or two), and a snack if you wish. The group does not have to stay together, you may certainly ride at your own pace - we can find caches individually or hunt as a group. There will be a “guide” near the front, as well as a “sweep” at the rear, riding no faster than the slowest rider. You can’t get lost, it’s an out-and-back route. Bring a pen or pencil…many of the caches are micros. Cycling and Caching have at least one thing in common -- FUN!!! The ride leaves at 8:30am sharp, rain or shine…think shine!

Event Schedule:

8:30 am Bike tour led by 2Wheel'in and MooseMaMa (2 hours)
10:00 am Sign in at pavilion, early caching in the park
12:00 pm Lunch and mingling
1:00 pm Announcements
1:30 pm - ? Caching and hanging around the Shelter

Important Information

Pets are permitted provided they are leashed at all times.

Please post your Will Attend log with:

1. What you intend to bring. If you don't know now, please post it as the event gets closer so we can keep track of who is bringing what and try to fill in holes. A list will be posted periodically for you to see what others are bringing. No dish, dessert or drink will get turned away! All food is welcome! and

2. How many people you are RSVP'ing for (so we can get an accurate head-count)

* Please do not log travel bugs into the event and leave them on a table to be retrieved by other cachers. If you'd like to trade TBs, please do so person to person. This way they can all be accounted for and none get left behind, listed on the event page and then deemed to be MIA.

Pot Luck Information:

* The food is potluck. NoVAGO will supply hamburgers and hot dogs. Side dishes are provided by event attendees! Keep in mind that even if there are 100 people showing up, you do not need to bring enough to feed 100 people! If 100 people bring enough to feed 100 people, that's way too much food, even for us! The list of food is below:

Additional Information:

1. There are quite a few caches in the surrounding area to keep you busy before and after the event! Rumor has it that there will even be a new cache published for the Event.

2. Lawn chairs, blankets, etc. should be considered in case we all can't get a seat at a picnic table.

3. If you bring Travel Bugs or Geocoins, please exchange them amongst yourselves rather than leave them on a table for trading. They tend to get lost that way and we all know how frustrating that can be.

4. Feel free to take photos during the event and add them to the event page in your logs! You can also post them to the gallery on our website after the event.

5. Please keep this Event on your Watch List, and check back often for any updates.

.................AS ALWAYS...A GOOD TIME IS GUARANTEED!!!
