Geocache Description:

The quiet village of Agios Ioannis, built at the south of Phaestos, is believed to have been inhabited continuously for 5000 years. The first known reference to the village was in 1303.

The village name has been adapted to the language of various invaders: Agios Janus Meligha, Giovani Meglia, Agios Ioannis Melika - this "Melika" only applies to this village and identifies it. Its modern name, Agios Ioannis, may also come from Agios Ioannis Xenos, a man from Sivas village, who built most of the churches in the area and was later declared a saint. His feast-day is celebrated on 26th September, when a feast is sometimes organized in the old schoolyard.

You can have a nice walk around the village of Agios Ioannis and see the the village church, built in the 16th century and Agriolidis Tower, a Venetian ruin.

There are many taverns in the village serving the local speciality: rabbit. The cache is placed outside one called - what else? – Rabbits! The owner knows about the cache and he will be its guardian.

To find the cache though, you don’t have to enter the tavern. It’s a film canister with a logbook only, so don’t forget your pen. You may also need it to make the cache drop!
