Geocache Description:

On a public footpath near Montpelier train station, Bristol. The cache is a plastic lock n lock box inside a camo bag with room for swag and trackables.

This cache conforms to the GAGB guidelines for overlooked caches

Montpelier station is on the Severn Beach line, and was opened on 1 October 1874. The section of line between Montpelier and Clifton Down was the first part of the Clifton Extension Railway to be built; this extension connected with the existing Bristol Port Railway and Pier line between Hotwells and Shirehampton. The Clifton Extension railway was quite an engineering feat, incorporating tunnels, cuttings, embankments and viaducts. The longest and highest section of viaduct on the line is that between Montpelier and Redland, the next station on the line less than 1km west of Montpelier.

Nowadays Montpelier can be distinguished by its large mural - it fits in well with the Bohemian vibe of the local area. From the cache location follow the footpath SE onto St Andrews Road, go down the hill and turn left at the bottom and you will arrive at the heart of Montpelier on Picton Street (approx N 51.466, W 2.588). There is another artfully painted building here that is worth a look, as well as two excellent eateries, the Thali Cafe and Bell's Diner. These two are at opposite ends of the spectrum price-wise, but both come highly recommended! In the opposite direction, walk down Station Road to 'The Arches', a well known local landmark and part of the viaduct of the railway line between Montpelier and Redland. The Arches straddle Gloucester Road, known for its independent shops, bars and cafes.
