Cloyne Round Tower Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

MunsterFan: Decided to do something different so this is going to have to go.

Not many visitors due to being a multi as most tourists just want quick numbers and don't want to put in the legwork.

Oh well, I hope to have something else in place before the festivities.

Geocache Description:

Irish round towers (Irish: Cloigtheach (singular), Cloigthithe (plural) – literally "bell house") are early medieval stone towers of a type found mainly in Ireland. Though there is no certain agreement as to their purpose, it is thought they were principally bell towers, places of refuge, or a combination of these.
Generally found in the vicinity of a church or monastery, the door of the tower faces the west doorway of the church. In this way it has been possible to determine without excavation the approximate site of lost churches, where the tower still exists.

Only the Round Tower and a firehouse (to be found in the cemetery opposite) remain of the ancient monastery. The tower is 100' high, each storey containing a window pointing in a different direction. The existence of the tower is believed to be an indication of the existence of treasures worth protecting against the Vikings. It was plundered on five occasions by the Norse between 822 and 916 AD.
This is an excellent example of a traditional Irish monastic round tower. The monastery was founded by St. Colman Mac Lenene who died in 604.

Although there is evidence of human activity since about 2000 BC. Cloyne really came into its own in 560 when St. Coleman founded his monastery here. Built on a network of caves which are all but impassable it is a wonder how all of the major buildings were built upon solid ground.

It is rumored that in the penal days (late 17th century) priests used a secret underground link from Cloyne House to the Catholic graveyard in order to say mass for the people. Cloyne is a typical Irish village set in the heart of East Cork, with many things to see & do in the area. Unusually for a village, it not alone has a Round Tower but also a Cathedral. The Cathedral has many a famous son in particular Bishop George Berkeley, after whom the town of Berkeley in California is named, who was the bishop of Cloyne for 18 years. 1734 - 1752
