ExploreWV’s third geocaching series is Haunted WV, which takes geocachers to 20 of the Mountain State’s spookiest locations – that’s asylums, prisons, cemeteries, and much more. Some of these cache sites have even been featured on TV shows such as SyFy’s Ghost Hunters, TLC’s Ghost Adventures, and MTV’s Fear.

Keeping with ExploreWV tradition, there will be a challenge associated with the Haunted WV series. If you choose to complete the challenge, you must “collect the ghosts” in each geocache and place them on an official Haunted WV Bingo Card. Only 13 ghosts are required to complete the challenge. The first 100 people to complete the challenge will be awarded a limited-edition Haunted WV t-shirt so you can let everyone know that you’ve been spooked in West Virginia. (Limited sizes available)

THE EVENT
ExploreWV will be kicking off our third geocaching series, Haunted WV, at the former West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville the evening of September 23, 2011. Join us for a night filled with fun and fright as we celebrate the darker side of the Mountain State!

This event will be held rain or shine as it is located indoors in the former West Virginia Penitentiary. Along with series registration, there will be refreshments, guest speakers, prison tours, and door prizes. New this year is a special Kid’s Costume Contest for children ages 1 – 11 years. Judging will be based on creativity, theme, and overall look and there will only be ONE gender and age-neutral prize awarded. One-hour Twilight Tours of the WV Pen will also be offered for FREE to the first 100 guests. After the free tickets have been given out, Twilight Tour tickets will be available for purchase at a heavily discounted rate of $5.00 per person. If you plan on taking a tour, you MUST BRING YOUR OWN FLASHLIGHT.

THE EVENT WEEKEND
Beyond Friday night’s Haunted WV Kickoff Event, the city of Moundsville has a slew of activities planned on Saturday, September 24th. Downtown Moundsville will be host to a street fair and ExploreWV will be there with geocaching maps of Moundsville and surrounding areas. Later in the evening at 6:00pm, the Moundsville Zombie Walk will kickoff at the WV Pen and will parade around downtown. A Zombie Ball/Masquerade Ball at the WV Pen will follow the Zombie Walk at 9:00pm and tickets are only $10 per person. If you plan on attending the Moundsville Zombie Walk and/or the Zombie Ball, you MUST register and/or purchase tickets online at WV Pen.
