TAKE NOTE:
Due to the weather forecast being a
bit damp (huge understatement) on Sunday we have changed the actual
event location a few hundred meters away to the Millennium Hall -
N56° 29.661 W003° 03.561 (near one of the parking co-ords) so that
there is somewhere dry to start from.
The hall will be open to us from 11am
to 1pm and we will locate the 'Bakes and cakes' and 'woodland
activities' there along with coffee / tea / soup
etc.
We have also just been informed that
the scout hut can't now be used however toilet facilities are
available in the Millennium Hall.
Please note that we have had to hire
the hall for this so there will be a 'donations' box at the event
of which all proceeds will go the community group who maintain the
hall.
THE LOCATION
Backmuir woods is a 45 hectare woodland cared for by The
Woodland Trust in partnership with a management group from the
local community.
The mixture of mature and new woodland and the wide variety of
trees provide a haven for many kinds of wildlife. Jays,
woodpeckers, buzzards, ferns, fungi, roe deer and red squirrels are
part of that natural mix.
There are about 9km of trails, including 1.5km on a surfaced,
all-abilities track. The remainder being woodland trails which can
become soft and muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is advised.
The gently sloping terrain offers views over the Tay to the south
and the Sidlaws to the north.
THE EVENT
This is an open event on Sunday 23rd October, by Elora, JMc, Big
Wolf and The Woodland Trust kicking off at 11am until approx
3.30pm, with the aim of showing locals the fun of geocaching. There
will be a short trail of temporary non-loggable caches for this
purpose with a maximum distance of 1.5km suitable for youngsters.
(If you didn’t collect a capercaillie at Formonthills, now is
your chance).
Or you may wish to adopt a newbie into your geocaching group to
find the longer circular trail of approx 20 new permanent caches
hidden throughout the woodland. (We would politely request you do
not hunt for these caches beforehand).
There will also be around 20+ new caches set on other country
paths, drovers roads, and other nearby woodland areas, as well as
around 45 drive-bys.
All in all 89 caches have been set for this
event and to help you plan your day here is a
link to a map which shows where all the caches are placed.
There will also be additional woodland activities for children
(of all ages) and the obligatory munchies, for which the theme will
be TBs – tray bakes that is.
The munchies will be available for scoffing at the Millenium
Hall (see waypint for location and parking), which is also where
the event log will be situated. Limited parking is available in the
small Backmuir woods car park as well. If using these car parks
please park considerately as they are also used by regular users.
Local parking in Muirhead is available, and is only a short walk to
the woods.
The nearby Weavers Mill by Camperdown Park offers a wide menu
and 2 for 1 on mains (except carvery), and a fully stocked bar for
afterwards! More locally, there is the Birkhill Inn, a stones throw
from the two new caches on The Roundie.
There will be some puzzle and multi caches. All caches will be
published around 10pm on Wednesday 19th to allow “thinking
time!” (Happy Bob?)

information.
