Geocache Description:

Church Micro 2087...Eversholt

This cache has been placed to bring you to the Church of St John the Baptist, Eversholt.

The cache is a recycled round plastic container with a gold coloured lid. It is approximately 2.5 inches in diameter and 5 inches deep. It contains a log and anything finders chose to leave in it. there is plenty of room for trackables.

Please note that the final cache is located outside the churchyard and is NOT accessible from inside the churchyard.

The first mention of the church in Eversholt is in 1166. However the church's roots are thought to be earlier than this. must date back further than this. Parish records began in 1628 and show the first baptism as that of Elizabeth Smith. The first recorded marriage was recorded in 1630 with the first burial in 1631. The original church was much smaller than the current building and consisted of a Chancel, Nave with a three bay north Arcade and a north Aisle. The Nave and Aisle were lengthened and another bay was added to the north Arcade at the western end in 1230. The churches font, resting on a central support also dates from the 13th century. The Chancel was rebuilt around 1330 and the north aisle extended eastward to provide a North Chapel and this was separated from the Chancel by a two bay Arcade. The three windows on the south side of the Chancel are 14th century. The 15th century, saw the tower built, the South Aisle and porch added and the Clerestory and Nave roof completed. The old hand wound clock was added in 1890 but was motorised in 1989. The current bells date from 1638 to 1882.

Please take time to explore the peace and tranquility, but please be respectful in the church and its grounds.

To find the location of the final cache, you will first need to find the headstone of Rhoda, George and Benjamin John Coles at N 51° 58.933 W 000° 34.241
Rhoda passed away June ABth 1917 in her 71st year.
George passed away December 14th CDEF in his 82nd year.
Benjamin John was killed in action April 19GH.

From here, find a bench in the churchyard in memory of Whalley Battcock for his services to Eversholt from 1950 - 199J.

Take a seat and look around the church yard. In the area in front of you, you will find a military grave to Corporal H. A. Oakley of the Australian Army Medical Corps who died on 4th November 1917 Age KL.

Please note: there is water in the surrounding area and as a result I do not recommend attempting this cache at night. Please take care if you have children with you.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
