TB Hotel - El carbur
Hem decidit posar un TB Hotel en aquest lloc ja que, a banda d'estar molt proper a la carretera, és interessant i va tenir una funció important en el passat.
Les franges de roca que es veuen a la pedrera es van formar fa uns 50 milions d'anys en una zona costanera. Les roques fosques són argiles i restes vegetals i animals arrossegades pels rius i acumulades al fons del mar en èpoques de fortes tempestes i grans riuades. Les roques clares són carbonats, formades per acumulació d'esquelets d'animals marins en períodes tranquils. La formació dels Pirineus alçà i inclinà les roques tal com les veiem avui en dia. La matèria orgànica de les argiles es transformà amb el temps en un hidrocarbur pobre que d'emprava per fabricar carbur.
Aquest tall a la muntanya és una antiga mina a cel obert de carbur, un recurs geològic utilitzat com a font de llum. L'explotació s'aturà a l'inici del segle XX, quan el carbur va anar perdent interès davant l'ús de l'electricitat. Cap al 1940, es va reobrir la mina, però la seva baixa rendibilitat va fer que s'abandonés definitivament.
El carbur que s'extreia d'aquesta explotació, era emprat fonamentalment en la il·luminació de les mines d'Ogassa o en llums domèstics, els tradicionals llums de carbur. Aquests constaven de dos recipients: l'inferior contenia el carbur càlcic, mentre que al superior hi havia aigua. Quan el carbur es posava en contacte amb l'aigua a través d'una aixeta, produïa un gas inflamable (acetilè). La combustió d'aquest gas és el que genera la llum.
TB Hotel - The carbide
We've decided to put a TB Hotel in this place because besides being very close to the road, it's interesting and had an important role in the past.
The rock bands which are in the quarry were formed 50 million years ago in a coastal area. The dark rocks are clays and plant and animal debris swept by the rivers and accumulated on the sea in times of severe storms and major floods. The light rocks are carbonates formed by accumulation of marine animal skeletons in quiet periods. The formation of the Pyrenees lifted rocks and bowed as we see today. The organic matter of the clay is transformed over time into a poor hydrocarbon used to manufacture carbide.
The mountain cut is an old open pit mine of carbide, a geological resource used as a light source. The operation stopped at the beginning of the twentieth century, when the carbide was loosing interest because of the use of electricity. Around 1940, the mine was reopened, but its low profitability made it definitively abandon.
The carbide extracted from this exploitation was used primarly in order to light Ogassa mines or household lamps (traditional carbide lamps). These lights consisted of two containers: the bottom, containing the calcium carbide; and the higher part, filled with water. When the carbide was in contact with water through a tap, it produced a flammable gas (acetylene). The combustion of this gas generated light.
