Vámbéry was born in Dunaszerdahely, Kingdom of Hungary, into a poor Jewish family. He attended the village school in his native town until the age of twelve and showed a remarkable aptitude for learning languages. He was forced to walk with crutches because of a congenital disorder and eventually had to leave school due to difficult financial circumstances. He worked briefly as an apprentice to a ladies' tailor, but after becoming tutor to the son of the village innkeeper, he was enabled by his friends to enter the "Untergymnasium" of Svätý Jur (Hungarian: Szentgyörgy).
By the age of sixteen, he had a good knowledge of Hungarian, Latin, French, and German. He was also rapidly acquiring English, the Scandinavian languages, Russian, Serbian, and other Slavic languages.
In 1846, he went to Pressburg (today Bratislava, Hungarian: Pozsony), where he remained three years. Later he studied at Vienna, Kecskemét, and Budapest.

The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady was founded in 1341 and rebuilt in the Gothic style in 1541. It was rebuilt again in Baroque style in the end of the 18th century.

Jeho krátka charakteristika: cestovatel po Strednej ázii, svetoznámy orientalista, univerzitný profesor, vynikajúci odborník na tureckú filozofiu, od roku 1860 clen dopisovatel, od roku 1870 riadny clen, do roku 1883 cestný clen Madarskej akadémie vied, od roku 1894 bol riaditelom MAV; bol otcom Rusztema Vámbéryho.

Vámbéry Ármin: született 1832. március 19-én Vamberger Hermann néven, majd elhunyt Vámbéry Ármin néven Budapesten 1913. szeptember 15-én. Rövid jellemzése: közép-ázsiai utazó, világhíru orientalista, egyetemi tanár, a török filozófia kiváló szaktekintélye, a Magyar Tudományos Akadémiának 1860-tól levelezo, 1870-tol rendes, 1883-ig tiszteletbeli tagja volt, majd 1894-tol az MTA igazgatója. Szegény zsidó család gyermekeként látott napvilágot. Édesapja 1831-ben meghalt, édesanyja nevelte, szegénységben nott fel. Hároméves korában megbénult a bal lábára, így járta be élete végéig a Keletet. Édesanyja késobb újra férjhez ment, amikor is a család Dunaszerdahelyre költözött. A helyi népiskolába járt 12 éves koráig. Azután szabóinas volt egy rövid ideig, majd a falusi kocsmáros gyerekének lett a házitanítója. Felismerve rendkívüli tehetségét, tehetosebb ismerosei elhatározták, hogy segítségére lesznek, hogy tovább tanulhasson.
